George E. Pappas was born in Velventos, Kozani, Greece in 1938. From a very young age, he loved music and stood near his uncle who was a chanter in their hometown and sang along with him. He chanted his first epistle reading at the age of 8 and studied Byzantine music throughout his high school years at the Metropolis in Kozani, Greece.
Mr. Pappas has been chanting in the Greek Orthodox Church since 1955. He has a graduate degree from the Byzantine School of Music in Thessalonika, Greece. While in Thessalonika, he studied under the Archon Protopsalti, Athanasios Karamanis of the Metropolis of Thessalonika 'Gregorios Palamas.' Mr. Pappas was elevated by Bishop Maximos to the position of Prosopsaltis of the Pittsburgh, PA Diocese in 1986. In 1990, Mr. Pappas relocated to Florida and in 1997 he was elevated to Archon Protopsaltis of the Atlanta Diocese by Bishop (now Metropolitan) Alexios."
Mr. Pappas is a member of the Byzantine choir Ioannis Koukouzelis of Thessaloniki, Greece, which has performed numerous times in Europe, Canada, Australia, and throughout Greece. He and Demetrios Kondis have formed a chapter of the Ioannis Koukouzelis choir and music school in Clearwater, Florida. George currently resides with his wife, Irene, in Clearwater, FL. Their three children, William, Carrie, and George are all married, and amongst them have seven children."
